A former PhD student at the lab, Rachna Bhoonah carried out her thesis within the Building Eco-design and Thermics (ETB) team of the Centre for Energy Efficiency of Systems (CES) at Mines Paris PSL. Her thesis dealt with integrating indoor air quality (IAQ) into the life cycle assessment of buildings. She developed a methodology for assessing the health impacts of IAQ in DALYs (disability-adjusted life years), based on INCA-Indoor©. These impacts were coupled with those of the rest of the building's life cycle, assessed using Pléiades LCA, in order to identify optimal ventilation rates according to room occupancy.
Buildings can be designed and operated to radically improve their energy efficiency and reduce their environmental impact.
