Khaled's thesis topic concerns integrating the planetary-boundaries concept into life cycle assessment studies of buildings and neighbourhoods. Buildings exert significant environmental pressure, and the current assessment based on comparative LCA is not sufficient to determine whether these pressures remain within planetary boundaries. This research aims to use the planetary-boundaries concept to carry out an absolute environmental assessment of buildings, while taking into account the aspects of temporality and regionalisation.
Life-cycle assessment is a method to assess the environmental impacts of buildings and infrastructures throughout their life cycle, from the extraction of raw materials through to their end-of-lifetime handling.
